Long-term investment in physics, skills and infrastructure will be key to turning fusion ambition into energy security and economic growth.
Responding to the latest government announcement of funding in fusion science, Tom Grinyer, CEO at the Institute of Physics, said: “At a time when the whole world is worried about energy security, fusion offers the real prospect of reliable, sustainable and plentiful power.
“Alongside investment in other green technologies, fusion can strengthen our energy independence so it’s good to see this commitment to the future of UK fusion.
“But we must also make sure we are getting the foundations of our scientific system right. Alongside investments like this in specific technologies, the UK needs to see long-term investment in physics science and skills, as well as support for our business innovators and a robust higher education sector.
“That’s why we need a 10-year vision for physics to ensure the UK has the scientific capability and infrastructure it needs for future energy security and economic growth.”
