IOP welcomes news on national photonics strategy

9 March 2026

Co-ordinating funding and activity can help build on existing strengths, says Institute of Physics.

Responding today to the news of recommendations on photonics from the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology, Tom Grinyer, CEO of the Institute of Physics, said: “We welcome the Council’s recommendations on unleashing photonics to realise the aims of the government’s Industrial Strategy.

“Thanks to investment in the foundations of physics over the last few decades, photonics – which uniquely combines classical and quantum physics – is a UK strength with an excellent research base and world-leading businesses.

“A national photonics strategy to co-ordinate funding and activity, and build on our significant strengths, would enable the UK to capture the transformational economic potential of photonics.”

He added: “Now is the time to harness the power of light for growth.”
