The e-MERGE Deep Galaxy Survey - a window on deep time
Speaker: Dr Tom Muxlow, Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, University of Manchester
The e-MERGE deep radio survey of the GOODS-North region is imaging radio emission from star-formation and Active Galactic Nuclei activity in thousands of distant galaxies spread across cosmic time; from which we will constrain the current models for the star-formation history of the Universe, especially for the assembly of early galaxies at high redshifts where there are still significant uncertainties. In addition, the survey will image in detail star-formation and AGN activity in individual galaxies and investigate the feedback processes between them which help to govern the co-evolution of the stellar population and the central nuclear massive black hole in galaxies during their assembly processes.
Dr Muxlow joined JBO as a staff astronomer and was part of the team developing and building the original MERLIN imaging array – and later the expanded and sensitivity-enhanced e-MERLIN /VLBI national facility. He is now at the University of Manchester, Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics where he has recently taken on a new role as the Manager of the Support Centre for UK programmes on the Atacama Large mm/sub-mm Array which is the leading mm/sub-mm interferometer on the planet with 66 antennas in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile.
This is a joint event with the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
